Question Asked:

How to work on a copy of an existing course Posted last year by Dave in Design-a-Course

I have an existing course. I want to create a new course which is largely identical to this existing course. I would like to make a copy of the existing course as the starting point for creating my new course. How can I do that?

The simplest way to do this is to make a backup copy of the original course, then rename the original course as the starting point for the new course, and, finally, restore the backup of the original course. Here are the detailed steps to accomplish this.

  • Start the Design-a-Course Author tool, which will display the catalog page with your list of current courses.
  • Select the course you want to copy and click the "Export Course" button along the right edge of the window.
  • Select the "Design-a-Course" button from the resulting window.
  • Write down the "File Name:" value from the export course window and click the "Export" button.
  • Back in the Course Catalog window, click the "Open Course" button to open your original version of the course.
  • From the course editor window, open the course properties by clicking the "Properties" toolbar icon of by selecting "Properties" from the "Course" menu.
  • On the "General" tab of the course properties window, rename the course to the name you wish to use for the new course and click the "OK" button.
  • Click the "Catalog" toolbar icon to return to the Author Catalog View.
  • Click the "Import Course" button on the Catalog View window.
  • Type the name that you wrote down earlier when you exported this course (or click that file in the file list window).
  • Click the "Import" button.

You now have two versions of this course in your Catalog View course list. At this point they are identical except for the course name. Edit each course to make the changes required for that variation of the course.
